Sobre Ábalos

Heritage

Ábalos is documented for the first time in the year 740, in the Albeldense Chronicle, linked to the actions of Alfonso I of Asturias. In the Middle Ages, it was associated with the Hermitage of San Felices and the Monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla. In 1726, it achieved its independence as a town.

Its monumental heritage stands out, with noble houses, the House of the Viceroy, and the House of the Grilles.

The area preserves an important set of rock presses linked to the winemaking tradition, as well as huts or wine guards from the 19th century.

Its patroness is Our Lady of the Rose, and it is the birthplace of the enlightened Martín Fernández de Navarrete.

Celebrations

The 3rd of August is celebrated as Saint Stephen the Protomartyr, patron of the village, with mass, dances, street parties, and festive events that usually last several days. The traditional “manchada” stands out, a route through the streets where participants get stained with wine, followed by popular food and a final firecracker display.

On September 8th, the festivities of Our Lady of the Rose, patroness of the municipality, take place. They begin the night before with a novena and Salve, and include the symbolic descent of the barrel from the church balcony, parades, music, and fireworks. The celebration culminates with the burial of the barrel, a symbol of the wine-producing character of the town, and a pilgrimage on the 11th.

Additionally, Saint Isidore, patron of farmers, is celebrated with a procession and a popular appetizer.

Gastronomy

The gastronomy of Ábalos is marked by the winemaking tradition of the Sonsierra and the richness of Riojan cuisine. Its Rioja Alta wines stand out, accompanied by traditional dishes such as Riojan potatoes, grilled chops, and products from the garden and the slaughter.

A simple cuisine, linked to the countryside and the vineyard, where wine is the main protagonist.
