Sobre San Agustín

<p><strong>Heritage</strong></p>

Set on an elevation at 959 m, in the plain of the Mijares depression, its most notable buildings include the Baroque Church of San Agustín (17th century), several hermitages, numerous farmhouses, and picturesque hamlets.

To the north lies the Mijares Canyon, where the river descends into a gorge with vertical walls over 100 meters high.

About 2 km from the village, Pradas is a historic and monumental complex where the Hermitage of the Virgen de Pradas is located.

This early Gothic building features a wooden roof and a porch for the rest of pilgrims during the traditional pilgrimage at the end of May.

Dominating the site is the Castle of the Baron of Escriche, a medieval fortification now mostly in ruins, though one tower remains well preserved.

Finally, noteworthy is the bridge over the Maimona River, with three semicircular arches. Next to the bridge lies a medieval hydraulic complex—dam, canal, and aqueducts—that once carried water to the Plano mill.

<p><strong>Festivities</strong></p>

  • Patron Saint Festivities: The main festivities of San Agustín take place at the end of August, with local holidays on August 28 and 29.
  • Festival of the Castles: The municipality also hosts this cultural event, part of the Gúdar-Javalambre summer festival program.

<p><strong>Gastronomy</strong></p>

The flagship products that define the local cuisine are:

  • Teruel Ham (D.O.)
  • Black Truffle (Tuber melanosporum)
