About this route

The route begins in the municipality of Villamanrique de Tajo, accessing from the urban center to the Natural Path of the Tajo, at the height of the Tajo River Park, a recreational space of great natural and social value for the municipality.

From this point, the path runs through the Cañada de la Esperilla, coinciding with the official route of the Natural Path of the Tajo. The route advances through typical landscapes of the region until reaching the municipal term of Colmenar de Oreja, specifically to the recreational area of the Fuente de Valdegredero, also known as Spring of the Roses. This pleasant forest space is ideal for taking a break, as the spring, with its water spout that flows all year round, offers a perfect environment for the rest of the hiker or cyclist before facing the next ascent of the route.

From the spring, the path continues along the Natural Path, crossing an agricultural mosaic of cereal crops and olive groves, until reaching the Camino del Cristo, which provides access to the Park of Cristo, one of the most prominent natural viewpoints of Colmenar de Oreja, with excellent views of the surroundings. There is located the Hermitage of Cristo del Humilladero, one of the most valuable heritage resources of the municipality, architecturally featuring two chapels: one from the 16th century, now dedicated to the Virgin of the Pillar, and another Baroque from the 17th century, where a replica of Cristo del Humilladero can be found.

The route concludes at the Plaza Mayor of Colmenar de Oreja, a space full of life, surrounded by restaurants and bars, ideal for resting and enjoying a snack with views of one of the most emblematic squares of the Community of Madrid.

The Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady castle Edificio

The Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady

Its construction dates back to the 16th century and consists of two chapels, one from the mentioned century with a small chapel in the shape of a Latin cross with a beautiful vault that initially housed the image of Christ and that currently houses the image of the Virgin of the Pillar. In the other, in Baroque style from the 17th century, is the one that holds the replica of the carving of Christ of the Humilladero since the original, gifted by the Pope to Bernardino Cárdenas in gratitude for his participation in the Battle of Lepanto, was destroyed during the Civil War. The altar and the altarpiece are the work of the sculptor Julio Vicent from the year 1940.

From the gardens surrounding the hermitage, the panoramic view of the village is unique.
