About this route

The valley of the Tagus River, in the province of Madrid, is a unique landscape of agricultural meadows traditionally dedicated to irrigation, gardens, and hydraulic resources exploited for several centuries through water mills, fulling mills, ditches, and hydroelectric plants, which have utilized the riverbed as a source of energy and natural resource.

In the municipality of Estremera is the Los Villares inland beach, equipped on the banks of the Tagus with sand and trees. It is one of the five places in the rivers of the Community of Madrid where swimming is allowed, it has a recreational area and services during the summer season, and has easy access from the route of the cycling path, facilitating visits from Estremera, Brea de Tajo, and Fuentidueña de Tajo.

The second part of the route is an entertaining leg-breaker along the Natural Path of the Eastern Soriana Cañada, from the banks of the Tagus, in Fuentidueña de Tajo, to the farmlands and oak hills of Brea de Tajo, at the border with the province of Guadalajara. Along the way, it crosses the Uclés Path and the route of the 40 Days Train, in the moors of the municipality of Valdaracete, completing a varied itinerary through places of notable environmental quality, historical towns, old railways, and remnants of a castle that was the seat of the Order of Santiago.

The passage through the popular tunnels of the 40 Days Train is simple and fun. They are at the beginning of the route, the surface inside the tunnels is good and there is no need to carry a light, as natural lighting is sufficient, taking precautions in the longest tunnel.

Types of path:

  • Paved section: 2.1km
  • Path section: 38.5

Forty Days Train Tunnels

It is a popular stretch among cycling enthusiasts due to the appeal of the tunnels and the gorge of the old railway cutting through the slopes and ravines of gypsum and esparto. The tunnels and trenches of the railways are impressive constructions due to their design and railway efficiency, facilitating the passage of trains in rugged terrain and maintaining a smooth and accessible gradient in complicated areas, with terrain elevations to reduce acoustic and visual impact in places of high environmental value.

A desert in Las Vegas

The cycling route through the landscape of steppe hills and slopes populated with esparto in the arid environment of the hills of the Cañada Real Soriana Oriental is unexpected and surprising, a new succession of contrasts and discoveries in the Madrid valleys. The path is marked with the posts of the network of Natural Paths, it has steep climbs overlooking a succession of white and gray hills, and for several kilometers, it resembles a desert from much more distant and isolated latitudes.
